Lisboa boasts the largest network of universities and research centres in the country, with 141,266 university students in the metropolitan area (117,000 in the city), about 68 higher education establishments and more than 10,000 teachers (data from 2017/2018).
Lisboa’s has built an increasingly solid reputation as a city of knowledge and innovation over the last few years. In 2017/2018, a total of 20,246 foreign students enrolled in higher education institutions in the Lisboa metropolitan area, including 17,854 students in the city of Lisboa.
In 2017/2018, a total of 11,125 PhD graduates were developing research projects at centres financed by the Science and Technology Foundation.
The transfer of knowledge from academic establishments to businesses and the city, the attraction and retention of the best national and international talents, and the integration of research centres into international networks represent challenges that Lisboa currently intends to address.
