Lisboa trade

A key part of the Lisboa’s economy, trade ensures sustainability and increases competitiveness, not only by meeting citizens’ needs but also by creating a vibrant, lively atmosphere, thus contributing to attracting people and increasing the city’s safety.

Trade plays indeed a key role in shaping the economic, social and cultural life of the city. As a determining factor in reorganising the city structure, trade can and should contribute to revitalising urban areas and imparting new life to flagging neighbourhoods.

However, trade currently faces a plethora of new challenges, namely ever increasing competition, changes in consumer profiles and the need to adapt to new technologies and modernisation processes.

Lisboa boasts several commercial areas, as shown in the map of retail establishments (data from 2009).

Stores with History

This project is part of a wider programme created by the Lisboa City Council in February 2015 for the purpose of preserving traditional shops. In this sense, the CML seeks to collaborate with Lisboa retailers in order to preserve and safeguard historical establishments and their material, historical and cultural heritage, while simultaneously revitalising commercial activity.

The programme is driven by the urgent need to protect this heritage, perceived as a key part of the city’s identity and character, as well as an important driver of economic growth.

The Lisboa City Council is submitting the applications of 14 establishments and 1 manufacturing workshop for recognition and awarding of “Shops with History” status to public consultation.

Lisbon Shopping Destination

The Lisbon Shopping Destination project is part of a strategy aimed at promoting, revitalising and boosting trade in Lisboa, such as to allow commercial offer to meet the increasing demand associated with ever increasing tourism. This strategy seeks to make the most of international demand at a time national consumption is low

This project seeks to takes advantage of the huge increase in Lisboa tourism to expand trade to less known areas, thus helping boost trade in these areas and ease the existing pressure on the most visited locations and popular spots.

Lisboa Consumer Dispute Arbitration Centre

Deemed to be of Public Utility, the Lisboa Consumer Dispute Arbitration Centre is a non-profit association whose founding members include public and private entities.

The Centre, which consists of an Arbitration Tribunal and a supporting Legal Service, focuses on the following purposes:

  • Informing consumers and businesses of their rights and duties in connection with consumer disputes (purchase of goods and services);
  • Resolving consumer disputes (consumers/businesses) rapidly and fairly through alternative means, namely mediation, conciliation and arbitration.
